Saturday Night Live and "Heroin AM"

I sent the following response to Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live after they aired a “commercial” for “Heroin AM”.  Should you be so inclined his e-mail address is below.
Dear Mr. Michaels:

The young man pictured below is my son, William.  He might have found your Heroin AM "advertisement" funny. We'll never know. Unfortunately, he was not alive last night to view SNL. This picture was taken on October 20th, 2012.  It was taken four days after his insurance company, Emblem Health and their utilization review provider, ValueOptions denied him the in-patient detoxification services he requested. THERE'S SOME COMIC MATERIAL FOR YOU!  He accidentally overdosed and spent the next six weeks hospitalized before we made our decision to remove him from life support, because he would spend the rest of his life in a persistent vegetative state.  THERE'S SOME COMIC MATERIAL FOR YOU!  Like thousands of other grieving parents his mother and I have had to cope with the loss of our son. THERE'S SOME COMIC MATERIAL FOR YOU!  As advocates in the fight against substance use disorder, his mother and I have spoken to two Congressional committees, a U. S. Senate Forum on Addiction, and at the National Institute on Drug Abuse.  THERE'S SOME COMIC MATERIAL FOR YOU!  You can go here to watch what we had to say at the Senate Forum. It's had just above 5,400 views.  http://bit.ly/1zgE7O3  MAYBE THERE WILL BE USEFUL COMIC MATERIAL FOR YOU THERE.  Not the SIZE audience SNL gets, I grant you, but we're working on it.

While we work on increasing the awareness of our audience to the heroin and opioid epidemic that confronts this country; while we alert our audience to the fact that opioids and heroin kill 129 people daily - more than die in automobile accidents; while we remind people that nearly 10% of the population at large (including your staff, your performers, and your audience) has had, has, or will suffer from substance use disorder; we promise to do our best to diminish your audience.  MAYBE THERE WILL BE USEFUL COMIC MATERIAL FOR YOU IN THAT!!  I'm sure your advertisers will see the humor in it!

We will do our best to encourage the 23 million people in long term recovery to boycott both your show, your advertisers, and your network.  We will do our best to encourage the 23 million people currently suffering from substance use disorder to boycott your show, your advertisers, and your network.   We will do our best to encourage the millions of family members affected by this disease to boycott your show, your advertisers, and your network.  YOU CAN CHUCKLE ABOUT THAT.  We're not.

Consider my television permanently turned off to your show. Kindly inform your sponsors I will no longer be purchasing their products.   Know that I WILL be encouraging anyone I can reach to do the same. When we say WILL at our house we remember a lost boy named Will and we take action. Unless, of course, you try some new material and air an apology.  Allow me to suggest a sincere and well thought out public service announcement. Perhaps something your network could air.  Should you do so, let me know.  I'll be happy to watch.

Feel free to share your thoughts with Mr. Michaels at:  lorne@lornemichaels.com

  4. This episode made me want to throw up? Do you know how many Mothers are up all night, worrying where their child is, and if they are alive. And you think it's funny. It is NOT. I am done with everything you represent.

  6. Well stated. I need to find out who their sponsors are. I haven't watched SNL in a long time. Their show has been going downhill for years. I'd rather watch reruns of the Golden Girls. So sorry for your loss.

  7. Bill.....thank you. I believe that as a group we should suit NBC and Saturday Night Live together for pain and undue suffering, I am not joking when I say this. There needs to be a damaging outrage over what this filth presumed to be funny agonizing waste of airtime was and what it did to those like you and me.

I lost my son in September.
I believe if we can find an attorney that has lost a child to addiction; we can begin the process of gathering signatures of others who would like to participate.

NBC needs to be held responsible for this purposeful act of total regard for human life.
Imagine the impact we could have for the cause of addiction if we could make them pay millions that we could then offer to those like your son who could not afford treatment?

For our son's; it is too late. But for us; we can do something still!!!!!

I am not kidding. We need a class action lawsuit against NBC for what they have done to us!

    1. As much as I'm sorry for your loss and think that NBC used poor judgement, your sons did that to you not the network. It was their choice to overdose and make that decision to use drugs. Don't blame others for your sons actions. Sorry for your loss.

    2. But to make fun of a disease that is killing millions, you have no right. So next week, are you going to do one on cancer, maybe heart disease MS, this was a very callous act and offended a whole lot of people, I don't watch your c show, watched one and thought it was entirely stupid, never have watched again. I am replying now, after watching the video, that was the most ignorant thing you have put out yet. Will spread this all over, will call as n any reporters as I can, will do my best to get everyone to watch this filth, and hopefully the network will drop your show. My son was squeaky clean, no drugs or alcohol, and was murdered because he would not enable a man and give him drug money. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. Do you randomly test your staff for drugs, I will bet not, because you would lose three quarters of your staff or more. You will hear all this on HSN, MSNBC, CNN, FOX NEWS.

    4. Substance abuse is NOT something to make jokes about. This skit was disturbing to watch. What is funny about watching a school bus driver using Heroin AM drive off with a load of innocent children? That's just one of the things in the skit that should infuriate every single person watching!!!!

      Delete
    5. Do not act like you are "sorry for their loss" with comments like those. Having a disease is not a choice. Please do research before spewing your ignorant opinion. I sincerely hope you never have to know what a loss like that is like.

    6. To the first coward "Anonymous", HOW DARE YOU? SERIOUSLY. Educate yourself. You're obviously not capable of empathy, much less intelligence of ANY KIND. You're hiding behind a name. WHY? Are you perfect? Ever made a bad decision? Poor judgement call? Done something out of peer pressure? My son was a GENIUS. He was also ill. He had an addiction that cost him his life. Now 8 yrs later our HUGE loving family is still fighting the rippling effects of this disease. And YES, IT IS A DISEASE. I hope and pray that something like the horrifying disease of addiction never touches someone you love. Although, sorry to say, odds aren't in your favor. Look around Baaa baaaa...buying in to the delusion Hollywood is trying to sell. WHAT'S (NOT) SO FUNNY IS JUST HOW MANY FORMER SNL STARS SUCCUMB TO THIS VERY DISEASE.

    7. Dude I can't stand people comparing addiction to cancers. This is a skit on a TV show.to say you should all get together and Sue for damages is laughably and funnier than the skit.which had me cracking up.do you have to be a junkie or have a kid who died to sue, or can you just be offended? People have less sympathy for someone who crashes their motorcycle and dies verses an overdose.and that's a shame. Drugs are bad. But easy to spot.i can't even imagine my grown roommate developing a problem without me noticing, let alone a family member.

      Delete
    8. You really should stop voicing your opinion if it is clearly so rooted in ignorance. No death deserves more sympathy than another. And no one CHOOSES to be born an addict. If you want to comment, you should seriously do some research first. You made yourself look like a heartless fool.

    9. Take a look at yourself in the mirror you ignorant asshole- go be a coward somewhere else and find an issue you now something about- has nothing to do with parenting - god I pray you don't have children or they are screwed- with no Real parent who knows life - get a clue asshole

  8. Beautifully, thoughtfully, and pointedly written. I'm so sorry for the loss of your son, and all of the other sons, daughters, moms and dads lost to this disease every day. I will continue to educate, advocate, and legislate for better treatment, insurance, and prevention services.

  12. Sorry for your loss Mr. Williams. My son died from a heroin overdose in February 2016. I am devastated as well and do not find humor in this SNL skit. The governor of Massachusetts has called this problem an epidemic and many states are faced with a similar tragic outlook. We need solutions not ridicule, we are loosing a whole generation. This is more like GENOCIDE not an epidemic, a whole generation is being wiped out before our eyes. I signed the petition, thank you Mr. Williams for writing this letter for all who can not speak for themselves. MC

  13. I have family and friends that are (or have been) in active addiction and I find nothing funny about it. SNL has crossed the line. I wonder if they have forgotten about the lose (by opiates) of one of their own - John Bulishi. An apology is THE LEAST they can do.

Mr. Williams well said I fortunately did not lose my son but he lost himself for 7 years to heroin. He is clean now and fights everyday to stay that way. This skit sickened me! And they had the nerve to put young children in it almost saying this is funny so it's OK to use heroin . There are so many children suffering from watching their own parents use and die it's incomprehensible to me why they thought that was a good idea. Thank you for fighting and bringing awareness to this horrible addiction. I'm so very sorry for your families loss

  23. Can't agree with you more, and couldn't of said it any better. They truly crossed a line! I as well have lost my younger son to substance abuse, and my oldest is in treatment as I am typing this. This country has a Severe epidemic and needs to be brought to the front lines, and not made fun of!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Very well written Mr Williams. I too was appalled and shocked by their skit. I lost my only son to an accidental heroin overdose as well so I know exactly how you feel. SNL will be hearing from me. I am hoping for a public apology at the beginning of the next show to be aired. If not I'm done with them as well!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Perfectly written and mirrors my thoughts as well. I lost my only so in 2008 to an accidental heroin overdose. If SNL doesn't publicly apologize, I am done with them too!!

  26. Thank you Bll! There is nothing funny about substance use disorder! There is nothing funny about finding my oldest son, attempting CPR, and losing him at age 22, in 2010 to a heroin overdose. There is nothing funny about what this has done to his three younger brothers, and the entire destruction of his family. We haven't been doing much laughing since...so I thank you for your letter to Lorne Michaels...and will also do the same and encourage others to do so, as well. Bless you!

  34. I lost my grandson at age 19 to heroin overdose. YOU find this funny? All of us moms who have lost children find this shameful to make a joke of this. Plus we have an epidemic in this country and we are losing people every day. Plus being a school bus driver in the skit is even MORE SHAMEFUL>

  35. Excellent. My children have lost numerous friends to this horrible addiction. I'm so sorry for your loss, forever changed life, lifetime grief. Then to have it treated little a cheap comedy routine. My letter is started to them.

  36. As the sister of an addict, I can tell you that while being sick addicted to drugs, they are also selfish individuals. My sister had such little regard for her child that she didn't care if she lived or died. Plus it affects the whole family and where it is sad that people lose loved ones to this epidemic, the addicts are also at fault. They don't give a fck who they hurt or if they die. So as a family member that was sick of living thru and seeing the countless overdoses, I merely turned my head. Stop always treating the drug addicts like innocent victims. No one shoved the needle in their arms or pills up their nose or down their throats. It's not SNLs fault they are dead. It's the addicts fault. I have no sympathy for drug addicts.

    2. I think you have to be a parent to really understand this. Siblings can be very angry when another sibling disrupts an entire family so I understand your anger. But your parents loved your sister and I doubt very much your sister wanted to be an addict. Cravings like that eat at your soul, alter your brain, and turn you into someone you never meant to be. I am sorry for your pain, your parents' pain, her child's pain, and the pain I am sure your sister suffered.

    3. Don't play the blame game. It doesn't help anyone. Trust me, the addict lives with self hate and loathing every day. I understand how we have a hard time sympathizing with active users. They're monsters. Once they pass, we tend to remember who they REALLY were; and they become angels. That's called coping. Peace.

  37. Amen my friend!!!!! My sincerest condolences on the loss of your son. My son has now lost four of his friends due to heroin overdoses. When I watched SNL last Saturday, my husband and I were shocked to see two things: (1) That they chose such a horrific topic to ridicule and (2) Still in awe that it was even allowed to air on national television. What a sad state of affairs to mock something like this. In extremely poor taste and not funny whatsoever.

  39. Great post and so accurate. I am a mother that has watched both of my children struggle w heroin addiction and there is nothing remotely funny about it. I have watched them go in and out of jail. I have waited for calls when they are out of jail to tell me that they overdosed. Everything about it is a struggle. It is rampant in pour communities and youth today.

  40. I have almost lost my son 5 times to heroin overdoses. Once I did CPR on him. That night haunts me to this day. I am mortified that anyone could find this funny in any way! I am so glad you posted that! I will be contacting them as well and have already signed a petition. I am so sorry for your loss and all the others. I pray for you and all of our children that are still battling this horrific disease.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thank you for that. I applaud you. I didn't watch the skit on SNL or on any videos posted on FB. I was upset enough. I lost my son on November 8, 2015 to an heroin that had been laced with fentanyl. If it wasn't for my daughter and my son's 5 year old twin sons I would gladly have gone with him. I miss him terribly. Just hearing about that disgusting display on SNL brought me to tears. Real comedy.

  42. Well said, I didn't see the show but seen it on Facebook...horrible I can't believe that they would make a joke out of something so serious that a lot of people struggle and fight everyday to stop!

  43. I am so sorry about William. Thank you for all you do for those still suffering with a substance use disorder. I too know the pain as I lost my 22 year old son to a heroin overdose in 2012. 44. I'm very sorry for your loss. I lost my older brother in 1981 to a heroin overdose and my younger brother in 1986 as well. I sincerely hope that SNL apologizes to all the families who have suffered through the agony of addiction. What's next? Will they joke about September 11th?

  45. What is wrong with the insurance companies in this country. Instead of withholding treatment and funds from their members, who I'm sure pay their premiums on time, and the providers who care for your sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers fighting this evil, they need to approve treatment and pay claims!! The insurance companies make it impossible for addicts to get the care they need!! Shame on them!

  47. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. My son died as a result of an accidental overdose. Heroin, among others. There is NOTHING AMUSING ABOUT ADDICTION. The sad, pathetic irony is that a great number of beautiful, talented, funny people who were on, or have formally been on SNL ,HAVE STRUGGLED WITH , IF NOT PERISHED FROM ADDICTION! So to add injury to insult, the VERY PEOPLE WHO ATTRIBUTE OR HAVE DONE SO IN THE PAST, TO HIS WEALTH AND FAME, HE JUST MIGHT AS WELL HAVE SPAT ON THEIR GRAVES. Shame on the witers, shame on Lorne Michaels for exploiting an epidemic and hundreds of thousands of grieving families for what they thought would make for a funny skit. Disgustingly poor taste doesn't even begin to describe it.

  50. Thank you so much for being the voice of the parents of children who suffer "the disease" of addiction. And I emphasize that because many ignorant people think it is a choice. My son did not choose to be an addict. He became addicted to Oxy's after a broken jaw which required 2 titanium plates to hold it together with screws and his mouth wired shut for 6 weeks. As the story goes, when those became too expensive, he turned to heroin. He died of an OD on 6-27-15 of a heroin/Fentanyl combination. I, too will never watch SNL again, and have stated so on their FB page. Thank you for standing up for us and our children.

Probably because TWO of your stars died from HEROIN, John Bulushi and Chris Farley....Hmmm they made you millions, next are you going to ridicule woman dying from ovarian cancer like Gilda Radna? Or how many of your so called actors smoke cigarettes? Why don't we make fun of Lung cancer too...so hilarious huh? I personally lost count of the "people" who have lost their lives from this disease! Yes "disease", like alcoholism is a "disease". You pissed a whole lot of people with the tasteless skit. And by the way, Julia Louise-Dreyfuss..are you that desperate? I never thought you were ever funny anyway.......sorry did that offend you? And YES, I am the MOTHER of heroin addicts. Who I love with all my being. Just like I loved my parents who died of Lung disease.

  60. I was touched by your article "Listening to the Dead". My son Matthew turned 36yrs old 03/14/16. Overdosed on heroin and benzos 03/22/16. And on 03/29/16, his father and I had the painful duty of removing him from life support. It's still very painful to talk about. To see your child struggle for 7 1/2 hours to the last breath should never have to be witnessed by a parent. This image will always be etched in my mind. His death certificate says "hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, heroin and ethanol intoxification" Accident. Really? Was it an accident? It should be classified as "murder". And all those who are responsible for distributing this crap that is cut with God only knows what should have to bear witness to there sins. So many young lives are gone, so many families destroyed. We need to make public awareness priority and force the government to cut the red-tape BS. Narcan needs to be readily available. These people need to know that there is a way out. The implants that NIDA have approved need be readily available. We are losing a whole generation! Is anyone listening? Does anyone care? I grieve for all that have lost a love one to this miserable addiction. The hell that they go through must be unbearable. God bless you all!

  61. I have never been a huge fan of SNL and after this I ABSOLUTELY NEVER WILL BE!! I can not even begin to fathom why Lorne Michaels would even for a second think that Heroin is a laughing matter. As a recovering drug addict I can tell you first hand that I am grateful every single day that I got sober before I found heroin because had I not I would most certainly be dead today. I've buried numerous friends, a nephew, and my children's Papaw all because of heroin. I am currently visiting my sister and brother in law in prison, while raising their teenage daughter, because of heroin. I IN NO WAY SHAPE FORM OR FASHION FIND ANYTHING ABOUT HEROIN EVEN REMOTELY FUNNY! My 15 year old niece is now learning to navigate a daily life in which both her parents are incarcerated because heroin was more important to them then she was. Hysterical right??!?! I hope and pray that Lorne Michaels, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, and the other utterly repulsive "comedians" in this tasteless skit never have to feel the pain, loss, and anguish that Heroin leaves in its wake. Or maybe I do so they can learn first hand how NOT FUNNY HEROIN ACTUALLY IS!! I WILL NEVER EVER ALLOW SNL ON ANY TV IN MY HOUSEHOLD EVER AGAIN!! I WILL NEVER EVER PURCHASE ANOTHER PRODUCT ADVERTISED ON THIS MORALLY REPREHENSIBLE SHOW! NOT 1 SINGLE RED CENT OF MY MONEY WILL GO TO SUPPORT THE BLATANT IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY THAT THIS DISGUSTING SHOW REPRESENTS! SNL, LORNE MICHAELS, AND EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH THIS PUTRID SKIT CAN GO FUCK THEMSELVES!!!
